Haitian workers take a break from a long day of labor in the sugar cane fields in eastern Dominican Republic. These "cane cutters" are often hired to work during the harvest season (December to June). Many Haitians leave their homeland and come to DR looking for employment and better life opportunities. Far from finding ideal labor conditions and fair pay for a hard day's work, they often find themselves being exploited by landowners who know that they will work for next to nothing just to be able to feed themselves, as the average pay in DR is $11 per day, about 5x as much as it is in their native Haiti.

Flying over the Amazon Rainforest is an experience that will leave you in sheer awe, and will inspire you to better understand and appreciate the importance of this critical Earth ecosystem. Housing over 16,000 different tree species and over 40.000 plant species, the Amazon is the terrestrial "lungs of our planet". It produces 20% of Earth's oxygen while absorbing and storing more carbon dioxide than any other terrestrial ecosystem on our planet. It is home to over 10% of all Earth's known species and 25% of the world's medicinal plants, while producing 25% of the planet's fresh river water. While deforestation in 2012 had been slowed to its lowest point in 25 years due to spirited conservation efforts, it has been on the rise again in recent years, with 2016 seeing a 75% increase in Amazon deforestation from its 2012 level. Overall, more than 20% of the Amazon Rainforest has been destroyed.

Kuna children from the Comarca Kuna Yala in Panama's Caribbean region. The Kuna are one of the most fascinating indigenous peoples on the planet. They are highly independent, as they operate as an autonomous community apart from the Panamanian government. The islands which make up the archipelago are as remote as any you'll find in Central America. Though they have over 400 islands at their disposal, the Kuna choose to inhabit no more than a few dozen of them, which helps to preserve and reinforce their culture and community bonds.
